Cosmetology Schools in South Dakota
South Dakota residents who are interested in studying cosmetology have several areas of interest to choose from. Whether they want to focus on hair, nails or overall beauty, one of South Dakota's cosmetology schools can help them achieve their goal. South Dakota have specific requirement that must be met to receive a state license. These requirements include:
- Must be 18 years or older
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
- Must submit an application for a license to the state cosmetology commission
- Evidence of payment of the examination fee.
- Successful completion of the NIC National written, NIC national practical and state regulations
Prospective South Dakota cosmetologists must also attend and successfully complete an accredited cosmetology school. While at school, they must fulfill the following South Dakota Cosmetology Licensing requirements:
- 2100 hours in cosmetology training
- 600 hours in aestheticism training
- 400 hours of nail technician training
Training will include courses in hair cutting, hair color, perms and other hair techniques, training for manicures, pedicures and massage, proper sterilization and sanitation techniques and other areas of cosmetology such as tanning bed training, facial techniques and proper makeup application techniques. Once a student has completed their training, they will be ready to take the NIC exams. The exams consist of a written test and a practical test to show their skill in hair techniques, nail techniques and the ability to maintain a sterile and safe work area.
Cosmetology schools can be found throughout the state. These programs are available for high school students and adults through the adult education program. According to The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics(BLS) employment options nationally continue to be good. The BLS estimates that between 2010 and 2020, more than 200,000 cosmetologists, hairdressers, and hairstylists will be added to the employment rolls—an increase of 16 percent.
