SD Barbering Training & License Requirements

Barbers in South Dakota are professionals who trained to provide haircuts, shave beards and style hair specifically for men. Barbering is an ancient and traditional profession rich in history. The field of barbering may grow by seven percent over the next several years, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Some barbers might aspire to open their own barbershop or salon in the future. The first step for all barbers is completing an approved South Dakota barbering school program.

South Dakota residents who are at least 18 years old and who have at least a 10th grade education can enroll in barbering school. Barber schools in South Dakota offer courses in coloring and bleaching hair, facial hair care, shaving, hair and scalp care and customer relationships. A barbering program curriculum must include at least 1500 classroom hours. Alternatively, students may serve as apprentice barbers for at least one year.

After training has been completed, barber students must take two exams. These are a national written test and a national practical exam. South Dakota lets students take board exams in either English or Vietnamese. If the student passes both exams, the South Dakota Board of Barber Examiners awards a license to practice.

South Dakota barbering schools teach students about cutting and styling men's hair, straight-razor shaving, men's facial skin treatments, creating and fitting hairpieces and grooming men's facial hair. Required classes also include barber sanitation and hygiene, barbershop safety, business skills and customer service skills.
