NM Barbering Training & License Requirements
Barbering schools in New Mexico appeal to students with a strong desire to learn about men's hair and skin. The climate in the Land of Enchantment can be harsh on hair and skin, so people who help others maintain a healthy and youthful appearance provide a valuable service to the community. Barbers in New Mexico use their hair care and styling expertise combined with the latest in men's skin care products to keep their clients looking their best.
In New Mexico barbering programs, students will learn the latest shaving techniques as well as different skills for cutting and styling men's hair. Students also learn how to keep equipment sanitary and to maintain a clean barber shop. Most barbering programs in New Mexico teach students business skills and customer service skills, to help students find new jobs after graduation.
Prior to entering the workforce as a barber, students must first complete 1200 hours of education at an approved barbering program in New Mexico. Students must be 17 years old and have obtained a GED or high school diploma to begin barbering school. New Mexico does not allow apprenticeships to substitute for attending an accredited barbering program. After school is finished, students take written and a practical tests to obtain their license. The tests may be taken in English or Spanish. When all the licensing requirements have been met, the New Mexico Board of Barbers & Cosmetologists issues the initial barber license. Some barbers choose to study cosmetology along with barbering and become dually licensed with the Board. New Mexico requires barbers attain 12 hours of continuing education every year in order to renew their license.
Career Outlook for Professional Barbers in New Mexico
The New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions Economic Research and Analysis Bureau reports barbers earn an annual average salary of $27,164 in the state. This is higher than the $26,160 for New Mexico reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The BLS expects the profession of barbering to grow by about 14 percent by 2020. Licensed barbers work in barbershops and hair salons, or they may own their own barbershops. The New Mexico tourism industry hires some barbers to work at hotels and resorts, catering to visitors and out-of-town guests. Some barbers even work in the booming New Mexico television and film industry.
