New Mexico is also an important cultural center for Native Americans. You can find beauty schools in major metropolitan areas such as Albuquerque as well as smaller towns like Clovis.
When you enroll in beauty schools in New Mexico, you learn about various cosmetology concepts such as cutting and styling hair, applying make up, performing manicures, and waxing many different areas of the body. You also learn basic business skills and the necessary safety regulations. Many cosmetology programs in New Mexico require general education courses such as English, mathematics, and communication. According to the New Mexico State Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists, individuals pursuing cosmetology programs in New Mexico must complete a minimum of 1,600 clock hours of training.
Once you have completed your training at a beauty school, you must receive a passing score a written and practical licensing examination. Upon passing the examination, you will have the ability to work as a cosmetologist or related position in the state of New Mexico. Cosmetology licenses must be renewed every year and individuals with an expired licensed for one year, but less than five years are required to retake the licensing examination and pay renewal and late fees.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), New Mexico employs approximately 1,440 cosmetologists and related workers. As of May 2011, the mean yearly salary for these positions was $25,770 or $12.39 by the hour. This is slightly below the U.S. mean yearly pay of $26,460.
