Beauty school is an opportunity to expand your horizons. It is also your chance to enter into a rewarding career field, where you are responsible for making clients look and feel fabulous. Your first step to becoming a professional in this field is to select a school. After that, you must adhere to the school’s prerequisites, which may include a test.
General Information
In order to be accepted into many beauty schools, you have to take an entrance exam to be considered. This is similar to many other colleges’ requirements; however, the test varies and in some instances, the test is only needed to be taken by certain individuals. For example, students who have a GED or have not completed high school may be required to an entrance exam, while those who possess a high school diploma will be able to enter into certain beauty schools without a test.
Some schools, such as ATI College and Sutter Beauty College require all students to take an exam. Sometimes, the test requirements are to pass the Ability-to-Benefit (ATB) tests or Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE). These tests evaluate your knowledge on basic subjects like math and reading comprehension. Unlike other subjects, cosmetology schools do not require you to take the SATs—a standardized college test that is hosted by the College Board.
Areas Covered on the Tests
While every beauty school have a different test, since a standard test is not issued by any governing group, each test varies greatly. One aspect of each test remains static; this is the fact that each tests covers general education subjects, including math, reading and writing. A sample test question from the ATB test might be to determine what a word means based on the passage that is provided. A math question tends to cover basic math operations and simple algebra questions.
Reason for Testing
The testing helps a school to determine if a prospective student is a fit for the school. A person who does not exhibit basic literacy and comprehension skills can find beauty school to be challenging and overwhelming. This hurts both the student and the staff in the long run, since both parties are putting time and effort into something that neither will reap a benefit from.
Jennifer Aniston is a hair goddess. Whether she’s donning subtle brown lowlights or lovely blonde highlights, her hair always looks fabulous. Other celebs, like Adele, have a unique hair color that is to die for. With her auburn, rich color, Adele stands out from the crowd. You too can care for your hair color so that your hair retains its rich color and looks great without having to go to one of the top hair schools. With these five tips, you too will become a hair goddess like Jennifer Aniston with vibrant locks.
1. Stay Away from Harsh Shampoo and Conditioning Products
Listen to your hair stylist on this one. Paying a few extra bucks for a salon brand of shampoo and conditioning products can go a long way in making hair color shine rather than fade. Special shampoo and conditioning products for hair color have chemicals that prevent the oxidation of hair follicles. These products even have sunscreen within them to prevent the fading of hair color.
2. Invest in Protective Conditioner
You should also add a few minutes to your daily hair regimen by using a protective conditioner. A protective conditioner strengthens and moisturizes hair. If you fail to use a leave-in conditioner, then you risk having dried out hair. Colored hair breaks when it is not properly moisturized. Avoid damaged hair by purchasing a high-quality leave-in conditioner. Apply the conditioner in the shower and leave it in for twenty to thirty minutes. Your hair will be noticeably smoother after you rinse out the conditioner.
3. Purchase Clarifying Shampoo
In addition to your regular shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in conditioner, be sure to add a clarifying shampoo to your hair regimen. Purchase a clarifying shampoo and use it only once or twice a month. Clarifying shampoo will get rid of all of the built up minerals in your hair, such as iron. Iron can cause oxidation to occur in your hair, meaning that the color fades. Use clarifying shampoo to keep hair vibrant in color.
4. Avoid Heat
Using heat on one’s colored hair can cause hair to lighten. If you have a beautifully rich hair color like Adele’s auburn locks, then you do not want the color to lighten. Avoid heat styling as much as possible. To get a look with curls or waves, simply try using mousse and rollers.
5. Keep Hair Away from Chlorine
Avoid chlorine as much as possible. Chlorine can also cause oxidation in your hair and will result in a drab color on your locks.
Follow these five simple tips for maintaining hair color that looks great all the time.
Angelina, Cameron and Adele. We love them for their flawless face and envy them for their team of stylists. But don’t despair. You don’t have to be a celebrity to have a flawless face. With a little know-how and a few tricks of the trade, you can transform your everyday look from fair to fabulous using these professional make-up tips.
1. Build A Strong Foundation
The first step to a flawless face is a strong foundation. Create the perfect base for your face with a custom-mixed foundation. If you are looking for more coverage, try a highly pigmented cream foundation. If you prefer a foundation that is a little more sheer, try mixing your cream foundation with primer. The primer-foundation mix will provide sheer coverage but will also provide the long-lasting wear that cannot be achieved with other sheer covers like liquid and powder foundations.
2. Camouflage Tired Eyes
If you, like many of us, struggle with under eye bags, use this trick of the trade for the perfect camouflage. Professional stylists use the “Hollywood V” method to hide unsightly under eye bags. This technique involves applying a color-correcting concealer under the eye in a “V” shape. Blend the concealer, working from the outer corner of the eye to the inner corner. Be sure to select a color-correcting concealer that is the right shade for your skin tone. The general rule for picking the right color-correcting concealer is to choose a color that is opposite of the blemish you are trying to cover up. For instance, if you need to cover up red irritated areas, try a green-pigmented concealer. To camouflage the blueish, purplish areas around the under eye, use an orange-tone concealer.
3. Eye Catching Details
A flawless face means focusing on your best assets and camouflaging your problem areas. Have small eyes? Then make them pop using simple make-up techniques. Make your eyes wider and brighter with a little bronzer strategically brushed over the crease of the eye. You can easily change the shape of your eyes using eyeliner. To elongate your eyes, apply black liner to only the outer corners of your upper and lower lash line. If you prefer to enhance your entire lash line, apply your eye liner in two smooth strokes. Begin by drawing a line from the inside corner to the center of your lashes and then from the center to the outer corner of the eye.
Another great tip: don’t be afraid to use color. You don’t need to rely on a professional for expert color advice, just use the color wheel. Try finding a shade that contrasts with your natural eye color for a perfect match. For instance, if you have blue eyes, look for orange and coral shades. Green-eyed beauties will benefit from pink, maroon and other red tones, while brown-eyed girls can pull off almost any shade with ease.
4. Lip Service
Looking for a tip for lasting and even-toned lip color? Here’s the secret: apply foundation to your lips as well as your face. Next, line the lips and fill in the rest of your mouth using a lipstick brush. If you want your lips to appear fuller, apply the lip liner outside of the lip line. For a more dainty mouth, apply liner inside of the lip line. You may also want to use color to increase or decrease the appearance of your kisser. Lighter lipstick shades will provide a fuller appearance, while darker shades will minimize.
In these days and times, every woman is looking for a little bit of relaxation and bath bombs seem to be a common choice to unwind after a hard day’s work. At the same time, the price of the best bath bombs can be up to twenty dollars for a single ball. For many women, this is simply not within their budget and they either choose to go without out or settle for inferior products that don’t have the same calming and soothing effect as their higher-priced counterparts. However, the truth is that quality bath bombs can be made at home with only a little bit of effort and the results will be twice as sweet for a woman who knows that she has saved money and can enjoy the most relaxing bath possible.
The first step for a woman that wants to make her own bath bombs is to assemble the necessary ingredients. The basic components of a bath bomb are mostly household items and can be found at the majority of grocery stores. Baking soda, witch hazel and standard food coloring will need to be purchased, as well as citric acid. If citric acid cannot be found from a local supplier, there are several Internet companies that will deliver a five pound quantity that will make countless bath bombs and will probably last the whole year, all for less than the price of one store-bought bomb. The remaining ingredients depend on personal preference, but should include a fragrant oil as well as a favorite herb. The tricky part may be in making a mold, but rubber ice molds are a great purchase that will last a long time without needing to be replaced.
To start, two parts of the baking soda will need to be combined with one part of citric acid. The amount depends on how many bath bombs a person wants to make, but it is a good idea to make a large batch and then have them for many months in advance. After the citric acid and baking soda are well blended, the coloring and witch hazel can be added and more mixing should incorporate these elements as well as the fragrant oil of choice. When the witch hazel is added in short sprays, the mixture will start to harden. The mixture should be stirred as the witch hazel and any other herbal components are added and then quickly transferred to the molds. After three to four hours, the bath bombs will be dry and ready for use.
The secret to making quality bath bombs is to choose the right fragrance and herbal components. A combination of lavender essence and thyme is a common choice, but some women may prefer more intricate combinations. Another option is to use a peppermint oil and then add dried mint leaves that will bring a freshness and powerful aroma to the bath. In spending just a few hours in making a batch of bath bombs, a woman can be set for the year, with a product that is much better and much cheaper than those that are purchased in stores.

2. Side Braids
Side braids add an enchanting touch to any look. Try wearing a simple floral dress, along with a side braid, to capture the essence of this spring’s hottest looks. Check out Kelly Osbourne or Adele, and you will notice that these women have hair that falls an inch above the shoulders. Mid-length hair styles are fun, free, and sassy. Simply cut a few inches off of your hair to get this look. To add texture, add some mousse to your hair.
4. Wild Ponytails
Ponytails with texture are trendy this spring season. At the most recent Michael Kors fashion show, models donned high ponytails with frizzed locks in the back. The result was that models looked chic and sophisticated. To get this look, add mousse to the pulled-back portion of the ponytail. Then, allow the rest of your hair to simply “fluff” in the back.

Keeping up with your favorite celebs is quite difficult already. From the outrageous blue hue of hair on the head of Katy Perry to the expensive lace front wigs used by Beyonce, celebrities love to defy the current fads in hair, and they love to set new hair trends, as well. Ke$ha is just one of the stars to surprise everyone with her new look.
The “Your Love is My Drug” singer shaved off part of her at the beginning of this year. If you thought that was the most extreme hairdo Ke$ha would sport this year, then you were absolutely wrong. She might only be 24 years old, but this woman is proving she can push the limits of style with edgy looks like what she’s currently rocking. She replaced the hair she shaved off with gold studs. In fact, in place of her real hair, she glued more than 25 gold studs on to her scalp. Ke$ha is definitely one pop singer who always changes her style, and her image is always fresh and new.
Not long ago, Ke$ha was spotted with her long blonde tresses hanging down, with her studded scalp. We’re sure you knew she liked a lot of bling, but did you think this glittered diva would replace her hair with some of it?
She might have debuted a more natural look in her recent photo shoot, but she’s still the party-loving vixen that the public knows her for. After displaying her natural beauty, she’s back to the chick rock look with false eyelashes, black eyeliner and even a tad bit of white on her bottom lashes. Her stud is back in her nose, while her hair is bejeweled, too!
Don’t worry though, KeSha has plenty more stunning styles in store for you. She’s debuting her new album this spring, so she’ll find some way to top the neon body paint, the glitter from head-to-toe look and the vibrant hair colors. We know one thing, the “We R Who We R” singer loves to be daring and bold with her look and the media just can’t get enough.

It would be easy to make a case that braids never actually disappeared from the radar screen of hair trends over the past 50 years, but it is quite clear to see that they have recently made a resurgence. The variation of braids worn by public icons has run the gamut from neon weaves to naturally messy and wild creations, of which no two are alike.
After being spotted on the likes of Nicole Richie, Eva Longoria and Kim Kardashian, it is clear that the messy and wild side braid is currently the hottest trend in the North American fashion world. Here are a few reasons that a messy side braid might be the perfect new look for you.
Separate Yourself from the Pack
While it may seem silly to suggest that someone should follow the latest trend in order to separate themselves from the pack, the truth is that many women lack the gusto and confidence to rock this messy side braid look. Whether it is a result of a conservative approach or a job environment where co-workers would scoff, the vast majority of women choose to enjoy the latest trends by witnessing them on others as opposed to embracing it themselves. Go boldly in the direction of individuality in upcoming weeks with the messy side braid. Fortune favors the bold.
Get the Attention of Adventurous Peeps
Much like the male peacock spreads it wonderful array of feathers in an attempt at gaining the attention of the most coveted mate, side braids can be worn at bars and clubs in order to garner the attention of potential mates. Only those with an appetite for adventure and uniqueness will be drawn toward a woman rocking a side braid, and only the most confident and charismatic people will be comfortable approaching her. In short, you can scare off the riff-raff and lure in the Mr. Rights.
An In-Home Cosmetology Lesson
Creating a look such as the messy side braid involves a handful of steps, but you will become more familiar with your hair and how to manipulate it throughout the process. It begins with a light coat of spritzer or wax spray on a deep side part, which can be volume-ized with a quick blow dry while the hair is still damp with product. Next, divide the section of hair into three or four parts and simply weave them together, making sure not to be too delicate or consistent with your technique. A personal touch can be put on the entire braid and the loose hair below it by teasing or curling, which creates the signature look of messiness and confident disregard for detail.
