Courses outline
If you are enrolled as a full-time cosmetology student, you can expect each full day to be entirely dedicated to learning your new craft. Classes for full-time students generally last a standard 8-hour day, much like a standard workday. If you are a part-time student, you can expect to attend classes at night, and perhaps even on the weekends. Depending on the program and institution where you are enrolled, you may be able to complete your education in less than a year. If you are in a part-time program, your courses will take you longer for completion.
Cosmetology training schools usually blend their teaching methodology into 2 parts: theory and hands-on training. Teachers usually demonstrate the techniques and procedures first, and then students can try their hand at it with mannequins. Through in-class instruction, you can learn more than just cutting hair, including:

Through the practical part of your program, you can learn how to use different types of shears, curling irons and coloring techniques. During the first part of the practical lessons, you will learn to cut hair on a mannequin. During this time, you can practice a number of techniques and procedures before you try your hand on a real client.
After you have learned the basic techniques and methods, you can expect to work in a student salon. Most schools have a student salon that will allow you to perfect your skills on paying customers; you will work in the salon under teacher supervision. Practicing your skills on real customers can help build your confidence and portfolio. It also helps you practice your interpersonal skills, which can really help when it comes time to start your career.
Programs included
Through cosmetology training, some schools offer nail technician training and esthetics training as part of the core curriculum in order to help round out your training. Each of these courses can help when it comes time to find a job. If your school offers these additional components, you will graduate with skills beyond cutting and coloring hair. You would also know how to give manicures and facials. These additional skill sets can help when you are looking for your new career. For example, some cosmetologists work at European salons and spas. That means that they do more than their clients' hair; they may also provide them with nail and skin care services.
After School
Once you have successfully completed your beauty training, it will be time to take the state licensing exam. The exam usually consists of 2 parts: written and practical. Some states require have an oral exam. Your program should properly equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to successfully pass your licensing exam.
